Book Discussion: "The Hate U Give"

A panel of lawyers will discuss Angie Thomas’ best-selling young-adult novel, The Hate U Give. The story revolves around the experiences of Starr Carter, a sixteen year old student who witnesses her friend’s murder during a traffic stop. The panel will discuss different perceptions of racial bias in the criminal justice system, including the roles of the police, prosecutors, defense attorneys, and the grand jury system.

Panelists: Judge Mark Kappelhoff, Hennepin County District Court; Donald M. Lewis, Shareholder, Nilan Johnson Lewis; Renee Dotson Gill, Corporate Counsel, 3M; Gloria Stamp-Smith, Assistant County Attorney, Hennepin County Attorney Office, Brianna Banks, Sophomore, Benilde High School. 

Cost: Free for HCBA members / $40.00 for non-members

*Cancellations must be received 7 days prior to the event in order to be eligible for a refund. The cost of materials will be deducted from total amount of the refund. Those registering for an event fewer than 7 days prior to the event will be ineligible for a refund.
